OSG’s thoroughgoing promotion of low temperature operations is applicable not only to precision manufacturing; it has also transformed OSG factories into comfortable places to work that are better for the environment. OSG plant air-conditioning equipment is operated efficiently, and this in turn contributes to improvements in productivity and overall energy savings. The result is that, although overall energy use in FY 2008 increased only slightly in the face of increased production, OSG achieved a year-on-year energy reduction in energy consumption per manufacturing unit, thus increasing production efficiency.

	At the Yana Factory, the heatexchanger used for cooling the central cooling plant was converted to a Top Runner, yielding a nearly 20% (432,000 kWh/year) electricity savings.

Total CO2 emissions have remained virtually unchanged despite the increase in energy beginning in 2005. This control of CO2 emissions is the result of a phased changeover from in-house power generation using fuel oil to the use of high-efficiency purchased electric power with a consequent reduction in the use of fuel oil. There were no changes in energy sources in FY 2008 and there was a small increase in CO2 emissions that increased purchasing of electric power.
In terms of production units, CO2 emissions were approximately the same as they were in FY 2007.

OSG is continuing its efforts toward the overall reduction in emissions product discharge and the conversion of emissions to useful material. In 2007, we achieved zero emissions* in all of our operations. In 2008, we went over from oil-based cutting oil to 100% chlorine free cutting oil so that cutting oil cannot be recovered as a useful product.
Thus, despite a small overall increase in waste discharges, the ratio of useful materials in this discharge is the same as it was last year.
